House and Contents Insurance

Everyone knows about homeowner’s insurance and how it can protect you from unexpected circumstances.  The question is what you do when the contents of your home is also damaged by these unexpected circumstances.  That’s where house and contents insurance comes into play.

Having both house and contents insurance can help you replace any items inside the house that are damaged as well.  A good example of this is if a hurricane tears your roof off.  House insurance would be able to repair or replace the roof, but what about the items inside the home that are damaged by the water of the hurricane?  The contents insurance helps here.

House and contents insurance may only cover damages in certain situations. Perhaps you live in a flood prone area and after a flood some items in your house were damaged.   You may not have coverage for this particular event because you knew you lived in a flood prone area.  Another example would be if you have fruit trees in your yard, and you suffer some damage from fruit rats.  This also would not be covered under any of your home and contents insurance.

The most important thing to do is to know your policy inside and out and know exactly what is and what isn’t covered.  You do not want to be surprised in the event you have flood damage only to find out that you have no coverage to repair or replace the damaged items.  You will want to go over your policy and be sure that items you want to be covered are, so you are not met with unforeseen financial burdens when something bad happens in your home.

When you search for house and contents insurance, you will want to do all the research, get as many quotes as you can, and go over every bit of the policy with a fine tooth comb.  Know exactly what is covered under each of the different policies you get quotes from, and choose the cheapest and best coverage for what you need for your home.

Buying house and contents insurance is the best way to keep yourself safe if circumstances beyond your control occur.  These circumstances can be through fire, theft, acts of God such as hurricanes, tornadoes or flooding.  If you live in a flood prone area, make sure that your home and contents are covered in the event of flood damage.
